Multiscale-dynamics in the human neuro-physiologic systems

July4th, 2020 (Saturday) 8:30-11:30am; 7:00-10:00pm

July 11th, 2020 (Sunday) 8:30-11:30am; 7:00-10:00pm

Compared to the output fluctuation of the traditional mechanical system, which is oftentimes rhythmic and regular with a linear pattern, the fluctuation of our human’s neuro-physiologic signals (e.g., EEG and EKG) is not that regular, but highly complex and seemingly random. Studies have found that this non-linear characteristic, which can be presented by “physiologic complexity”, is linked to the system’s functionality to adapt to stressors (e.g., aging, disease, and even the burden of the physical load in athletic competition). This lecture series will introduce: 1) the theory of physiologic complexity in the human neuro-physiologic systems; 2) the methods and metrics derived from the non-linear dynamics to quantify such complexity; 3) recent research findings about implementing those metrics to capture the functionality of systems in different stressing conditions; and 4) the strategies targeting to restore such physiologic complexity as well as the functionality of the neuro-physiologic systems.
